Obaagun quarry not closed for operations - Hon Awotunde
The Chairman, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, Hon. Sarafadeen Abiodun Awotunde, has declared that the quarry located in Obaagun is not closed down for operations by the authorities of the local government contrary to rumours sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the local government area.
Hon Awotunde who is also the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) expressed deep shock and sadness over the tragic truck accident that occurred at the popular Oja Oba Market in Ikirun on Tuesday - 12th August, 2025, which reportedly claimed several lives, left many injured and caused destruction of valuable properties.
While commiserating with the families of the departed people, the ALGON chairman prayed for the quick recovery of those injured, just as he sympathized with traders, business owners and residents whose properties were destroyed in the unfortunate incident.
In a move to find a lasting solution to the incessant accidents in the area, Hon. Awotunde has engaged the Office of Mineral Resources in Osun State and initiated ongoing discussions between the Akinrun-in-Council, the Olobaagun-in-Council and other stakeholders involved in quarry operations in Obaagun.
These engagements, according to him is aimed at averting future occurrences of such tragedic incident.
The Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government commended all security agencies for their swift and coordinated while the incident lasted, noting that their efforts helped to prevent further loss and degeneration into a state of anarchy.
Contrary to circulating rumours, Hon. Awotunde clarified that neither the State Government nor the Local Government Authority has ordered the closure or sealing of the quarry site in Obaagun from where the trucks usually load. Instead, the focus remains on implementing proactive measures to ensure safety and prevent a recurrence.
Hon. Awotunde called on all residents, truck drivers, quarry management teams, and communities involved in quarry activities within Ifelodun Local Government to remain calm, law-abiding, and patient as the state government is working with his office towards a positive and lasting resolution.
“Our priority is to safeguard lives, protect livelihoods, and ensure that such painful incidents become a thing of the past,” Hon. Awotunde stated.
